X-Cite® TURBO with LaserLED Hybrid Drive™

Excelitas Technologies® Corp., a global technology leader delivering innovative, customized photonic solutions, announced that its X-Cite® TURBO with LaserLED Hybrid Drive has been honored as one of the ten best microscopy innovations in 2016 by Microscopy Today Magazine. With many research institutions looking to phase out mercury-based systems entirely, X-Cite TURBO with LaserLED Hybrid Drive provides a viable alternative for these demanding applications where simple LED-based solutions fall short.

Owned by the Microscopy Society of America, Microscopy Today coverage spans all microscopy techniques including light microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, electron microscopy, ion-beam techniques, and the wide range of microanalytical methods. The Microscopy Today Innovation Awards recognize products and methods on the basis of their importance and usefulness to the microscopy community. Winners of the 2016 awards provide better, faster or entirely new methods of analysis using some type of microscope or microanalytical instrument.

A solid-state illuminator for fluorescence microscopy, X-Cite TURBO features six individually controllable wavelengths covering the UV and visible spectrum. To overcome the individual limitations of LEDs, lasers and phosphor light engines, a hybrid design approach was adopted. X-Cite TURBO’s patented LaserLED Hybrid Drive combines the best of two technologies – LED and Laser Phosphor Illumination to efficiently generate powerful multi-wavelength solid-state light output in a compact form factor. (US Patent No. 9,239,133)

“We are pleased that X-Cite TURBO with LaserLED Hybrid Drive has been honored with an Innovation Award by Microscopy Today. While there are many LED-based light engines on the market today, none meet all the needs of the biomedical illumination market segment,” said Oliver Scheuss, Vice President of Solid State Lighting and UV/Microscopy at Excelitas Technologies. “The X-Cite TURBO’s novel product platform uses laser technology to overcome the efficiency and radiance limitations of typical ‘white’ or green LEDs, while also enabling color selection and benefitting from added discrete wavelength LEDs to increase the spectral breadth. This architecture improves optical coupling, and provides a spectral output that can be tailored to the application and controlled by the user.”

Microscopy Today Innovation Award winners will be officially honored at the Microscopy & Microanalysis 2016 Meeting in Columbus, Ohio during an awards ceremony at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, July 27, 2016.
